Ho Chi Minh is a lovely and historical city with quirky, little cafes tucked in alleyways and nondescript dilapidated buildings. The unassuming facades of the buildings, where these cafes are located, do not warrant a second glance so I suggest you read up on them […]

Imagine being in Hogwarts and partaking of a feast with Hagrid, Harry Potter, Hermione, Ron and Professor Dumbledore. Well, we really didn’t get to do that but what we had was pretty close. Ho Chi Minh is home to the Thị Trấn Ba Cây Chổi or Three Broomstown Cafe in Vista Walk. The place was magical and I must say something very unusual for a cafe.
Also more popularly known as Saigon, Ho Chi Minh City can be found in Southern Vietnam and it is popular for the role it played during the Vietnam War. The city was named after Ho Chi Minh, the revolutionary Vietnamese Communist leader who was a key figure in the foundation of the Democratic Republic of Vietnam in 1945.
My first impression of the city was chaotic, with motorbikes running here and there with no concern for passengers but I have come to realize that the honks of motorbikes as they navigate the roads of the city is what actually gives the city its unique flair. Ho Chi Minh City, I reckon, will never be Ho Chi Minh City without its medley of motorbikes.
One of the most talked about wars in history is the Vietnam War or the Resistance War Against America. Thanks in part to movies such as Apocalypse Now, Platoon and Born on the Fourth of July, the war has been immortalized and brought to everyone’s […]
Anthony Bourdain, the culinary god himself, keeps coming back to Vietnam and I perfectly understand why. Vietnamese cuisine is one of the most delicious and healthiest in the world and just the thought of it makes my mouth water and makes me ask for more. […]
Traveling forces you out of your comfort zone, puts a dent on your wallet and thrusts you into a strange new world with strange people. So, why should you even travel? Why, indeed? This is a very good question which forces one to think. Let me give you my two cents on the matter.
Traveling is less expensive than you think
When discussing travel, people almost always get the notion of blowing their budget and burning a hole in their pockets. This is not always the case. Yes, it is a given that purchasing plane tickets, especially to faraway places, is going to sting a bit, but with good research you will be delighted to know that there are many ways to make travel feasible without going bankrupt.
Creativity and research are the keys in making sure that you do not spend more than necessary on your vacation. A good option for those who have a tight budget is couch surfing. Couch surfing affords travelers a cheap form of lodging by staying and sleeping on acquaintances’ couches rather than hotels. If you do not dare think about couch surfing, there are always affordable hostels.
No, this is not for people who are quite picky about accommodations but if you must travel with budgetary constraints, these are the best routes. If you do not know anyone who can help you find a suitable place in your dream destination, you can always get more information on the Internet.
You will learn lessons about yourself
One of my primary reasons for traveling is self-growth and I always tell people this when they ask me why I choose to spend money going to other places instead of staying put and buying the latest gadgets. Life lessons can be as simple as navigating a foreign city by yourself or speaking the local language. Lessons do not necessarily have to be earth-shattering. The only way to learn something new is to get out and experience things.
There are people waiting to be met
William Butler Yeats once said, “There are no strangers, only friends waiting to be met”. He was indeed a wise man. Why confine yourself in one place when there are so many amazing people waiting to be met?
True, you may not meet your soul mate while trying to dodge traffic in Ho Chi Mihn. You may not figure in a whirlwind romance with a dashing, olive-skinned gentleman. Your trip may not even turn out the way you wanted it to be but who knows? Maybe it will! Maybe you will find your soul mate in a foreign city! Maybe you will fall in love! The beauty of life lies in its uncertainties. Learn to take a chance. Meet new people!
Rekindle that passion for adventure
Getting on a plane and seeing the city become speckles and dots while looking at them from a thousand feet in the air always gives me a sense of awe. The thought that I am soon going to land in a place where I have never been before quenches my thirst for adventure. In a world where people are getting old before their time because of worries about deadlines, making a living and paying bills; the flame of adventure in all of us can easily get snuffed out. We must not forget to truly live while we are still alive. Rekindle your passion for adventure and for the unknown.
It will give you a whole new perspective on life
Ever wondered how the world looks through somebody else’s eyes? Travel gives you the perfect opportunity to do just that. Meeting people from different cultures will give you a different perspective. You might be dead wrong about a certain place or a certain thing. There is no better way to be corrected than through traveling. This is both humbling and wonderful at the same time.
So, what are you waiting for? Go on that trip. Get that ticket and get on that plane!
